Usually in conjunction with the Red Ribbon Week activities the week long Drug Store Program is put on for Shasta County 8th Graders as a type of "scared straight" program to prevent future illegal substance/drug abuse. The program is made possible through a large collaborative effort of local law enforcement agencies, Shasta County Office of Education, Shasta County Alcohol & Drug Programs, The Chemical People, local hospitals, the probation department, local recovery programs and numerous volunteers. The main details of this event are not publicized in order to maintain a sense of shock for students. This year's event will be May 14-18, 2007. For more information or to volunteer please feel free to call the Chemical People at 241-5958.
The Walk Against Drugs is an annual spring time event that brings in participants from all over the county. Students start the walk from the Shasta County Court House and end the walk at the Elks Lodge west of Caldwell Park. Participants have fun walking through downtown Redding shouting slogans, carrying signs, and encouraging drivers to honk in support of a healthy life-style. Upon arriving at the Elks lodge students enjoy a pizza lunch and then participate in songs and games until it is time for them to leave.
This year marks the 8th Annual Strike Back For Kids Bowl-A-Thon that was held October 6, 2007 at Country Bowl. The Bowl-A-Thon raises funds for two organizations, Help Inc and the Chemical People. Bowlers go out into the community to solicit pledges from family, friends, businesses, and anyone who will give. On the day of the event, besides having a great time bowling, participants can bid in a silent auction for great prizes donated by local businesses, generating more funds to be divided up between the two agencies. We raised over $3,000 this year. Thank you to all the participants and local donors throughout the community!
